Auto brightness not working on iPhone 5?

I set the brightness to what I want. A random amount of time later, the phone changes it to something it wants. To me, that's not working.

• They changed something but didn't tell people how to use it
• Brightness now changes so slowly that people don't know if it's working
• Taking too long to dim is going to increase the time people need to adapt to the dark
• It also takes so long to change, you don't know if you're adjusting the final value or some intermediate
