Patterns In Fiction

Has anyone noticed that when writers run out of ideas, they'll come up with:
  1. Female versions
  2. Child versions
  3. Alternate realities?
This is most obvious in the Shrek series, where the female character was there from the start, then the next films had children and the last film was set in an alternate reality. It's also seen in comics and cartoons (Tom and Jerry kids, Mickey Mouse, and it looks like even Superman has female and kid versions).
