Import photos into iMovie without using iPhoto

Apple products are great - if you use all their products. I wanted to use a folder of photos in iMovie, and I don't use iPhoto. I'd done it before, but I couldn't remember, so I'm writing it here.

First open the photo browser in iMovie and drag the divider so you can see the list of sources:
Then just drag the folder you want into that list.

    I tried dropping my photo folder in (all saved as jpegs) and its saying:

    The file will not be imported.
    It is not compatible with iMovie.

    :(
