You have to empty the whole Trash, you can't delete individual items. I believe this is a security flaw. It's especially annoying when you're deleting things from removable drives, because they're still there and taking up space.
It's amazing how some people will defend Apple by saying, oh, it's trash, you shouldn't keep stuff in there, if it's so important to delete it then just deleting isn't enough, you have to wipe the disk etc.
