Compact camera vs DSLR

On my recent holiday, my friends were using compact cameras while I had my "new" D50. This gave me an excellent chance to compare the 2 kinds of cameras.

Noise
Casio EX-Z75, ISO 800

D50, ISO 1600
Despite having a higher ISO rating, there is less noise in the image taken with the DSLR. I think it's partially due to the larger sensor, which can collect more light per pixel.

Zoom
Casio EX-Z75, focal length in 35 mm: 51 mm

Canon Ixus 80 IS, digital zoom 2.55

D50, focal length in 35 mm: 82 mm
Unfortunately I hadn't changed my lens when I took the picture, so the longest zoom I could get was 55 mm. I wonder how close I could get if I used my 200 mm zoom lens. I wonder how zoom in compact digital cameras (measured in 3× etc.) converts to focal lengths. Someone told me 35 mm is taken to be 1×, but I want to make sure they're not confusing that with sensor size. The Canon Ixus 80 IS has 3× zoom and 35 mm focal length from 38 - 114 mm.

The fast shooting speed of DSLRs lets you take many shots during action sequences, allowing you to choose the best one.

I think the compact wins here. I would've backed off a bit.

Fill Bounce flash looks much more natural. I keep calling it fill flash by mistake!
