Android programs.

These are the programs I find essential in Android:

  • Task manager (TasKiller) - Android does not come with any easy way to manage tasks. Do you trust the developers to exit tasks responsibly? Killing tasks saves battery life, improves performance and may reduce data costs.
  • File manager (ASTRO) - use to open/delete/backup files on the SD card. The Gallery is impractical for large numbers of pictures, and it's easier to browse then open documents.
  • Notepad (AK Notepad) - honestly, no built-in notepad program? Anyway, I use it to record things to do and buy.
  • Data counter (NetCounter) - How many people are fortunate enough to have unlimited mobile data plans? Australia doesn't even have unlimited HOME Internet plans!
  • Data toggler (Toggle Data) - Another important app if you don't have unlimited data or don't want to be charged for roaming data. Disable your data access when you don't need it. Improves battery life, reduces data costs and DISABLES ADS!

And these are the cool apps I found:
  • Am I Prime? - Determines if a given number is prime, finds the largest prime number before a given number and finds Goldbach primes.
  • Barcode Scanner - the Android phone book can generate QR barcodes, but Android can't read them. In fact, this is the only way I've found to read QR codes so far (other than using a computer program). I can't figure out why they're so popular.
  • Compass
  • GPS Speedo - displays raw latitude and longitude data from the GPS and uses it to calculate your current speed.
  • Metal Detector - it really works! But only detects large pieces of magnetic metal. Probably uses the magnet sensor.
  • Pedometer - no need to buy a separate pedometer, this measures your footsteps. However, it uses a lot of battery.
  • Sensor List - displays raw data from the accelerometers, tilt sensor, magnetic field and temperature. It might display more data for phones with more sensors (speculation).
  • Wifi Analyzer - useful for choosing a channel for your WiFi network. Displays all channels used and their strengths.
