MacBook Pro's SD card reader

Is it me, or are built-in SD card readers particularly unreliable? My Fujitsu Lifebook's didn't work, the MBP's has problems mistaking cards as write-protected, and now mine's working is hit-and-miss. I'd trade it for another USB port.
